Generation 1
The first generation of Pokémon. Absolutely horrible for ghost types, in terms of numbers. Gengar's line is the only ghost type line in the Generation. Gastly was only found at the Pokémon Tower in Kanto at the time. While Gengar may be the only ghost in the generation, he has since become a very popular choice for ghost users. During this Generation, the type weaknesses were different. Ghosts were only super effective against themselves, and had no effect on psychics, though some think this may have been a mistake. Not great for moves, the most major move for ghosts introduced in this generation was Confuse Ray, which confuses the opponent.

Generation 2
Another poor Generation for Ghosts. Worse than first, this Generation has one and one only, Misdreavus. Misdreavus's evolution was not introduced until later, leaving it alone. However it was the first pure Ghost type in Pokémon. Found only at Mt. Silver during the night, Misdreavus was a difficult catch. However in this generation, Ghost types became super effective, contradictory to the previous generation. A widely used move, Curse is introduced in this generation. Curse works differently for Ghosts in that when used by a non-ghost type it is a stat raising move, but when used by ghosts, it cuts the user's HP and inflicts a Curse on the foe. The curse cuts out 1/4 of the opponents health each turn. While this was a bad generation in numbers, it has introduced some good ghost moves this generation.

Generation 3
Finally, we see a pickup in Ghost types during the generation.
This generation consists of several new ghost types, Shuppet, Banette, Duskull, Dusclops, Shedinja and Sableye. Still a minimal amount of ghost types, however considerably more than the previous generation. Still, ghost types are pretty effective. Introduced in this generation is the move Shadow Punch, a widely used move. The thing about this move is that it is unchanged by accuracy and evasion stats of the foe and of the Pokémon itself.

Generation 4
Just about as big a generation for Ghost types, the 4th generation introduced even more ghosts. They consist of Mismagius (Misdreavus evo), Dusknoir (Dusclops evo), Drifloon, Drifblim, Spiritomb, Giratina, Rotom and Froslass (Snorunt evo). Even more than Generation 3, there are 8 new ghost types. This generation is not introductory to a no-weakness type, (Sableye, the first) but Spiritomb is much more often used than Sableye and has much better stats. Not many new moves are introduced, but a major one is Shadow Sneak, a priority move that hits first unless certain other priority moves are used by the foe.
Ghost Type Trivia!
There were no pure Ghost-type species in Generation I.
There are no Ghost-type moves that have an accuracy lower than 100%, as all of them have a 100% accuracy or never miss.
While the Ghost-type has an immunity to Normal-type moves, several damaging moves that display as Normal can affect them, most notably Struggle.
